10 Weird Things Covered by Home Insurance

Homeowners insurance is something that most people don’t think about until they need it. It’s designed to protect you from the unexpected, but did you know that there are some pretty strange things that can be covered by your home insurance policy? From falling space debris to attacking squirrels, there are some things that you just can’t prepare for. In this blog post, we’ll take a look at 10 weird things that may be covered by your home insurance policy.

  1. Space Debris: Believe it or not, if a piece of space debris were to fall onto your home and cause damage, it could be covered by your home insurance policy. This may seem far-fetched, but there have been instances where space debris has fallen to Earth and caused damage to homes.
  2. Pet Damage: If you have a dog or cat that causes damage to your home, such as tearing up furniture or scratching the walls, it may be covered by your home insurance policy. However, if your pet causes injury to someone else, you may need additional liability coverage.
  3. Identity Theft: Identity theft can be a nightmare, but your home insurance policy may be able to help. Some policies offer coverage for expenses related to restoring your identity, such as legal fees and lost wages.
  4. Zombie Attacks: Okay, this one is a bit of a joke, but some home insurance policies actually do have coverage for damage caused by “zombie attacks.” Of course, this coverage is typically included as part of a broader “apocalypse” policy.
  5. Falling Objects: If a tree or other object falls onto your home and causes damage, it may be covered by your home insurance policy. However, if the object was on your property and you were aware of its potential danger, you may not be covered.
  6. Power Outages: If a power outage causes damage to your home, such as spoiling food in your refrigerator, it may be covered by your home insurance policy. This coverage may also extend to damages caused by power surges.
  7. Riots: If your home is damaged during a riot, it may be covered by your home insurance policy. However, if you participate in the riot or instigate it, your coverage may not apply.
  8. Meteor Damage: Similar to space debris, if a meteor were to fall onto your home and cause damage, it could be covered by your home insurance policy. Again, while this may seem unlikely, it has happened before.
  9. Sinkholes: If a sinkhole opens up underneath your home and causes damage, it may be covered by your home insurance policy. However, sinkhole coverage is not typically included in standard policies and may need to be added as an endorsement.
  10. Animal Damage: If a wild animal, such as a deer or raccoon, causes damage to your home or personal property, it may be covered by your home insurance policy. However, if the animal is a pet or a farm animal, you may need additional coverage.

While many of us hope that we never have to use our home insurance, it’s reassuring to know that it can cover a wide range of unexpected events. From space debris to zombie attacks, your home insurance policy may have you covered. However, it’s important to read your policy carefully and understand what is and is not covered. If you’re not sure, reach out to your insurance agent and ask for clarification. After all, you never know what might happen.
